landscape design with winter interest in mind

As you find yourself in the middle of winter with below freezing temperatures and wind chills, it is a perfect time to stay inside and look out at your yard. What do you see? What would you like to see? This is the time you want to think about how you may want to fill in and add to your landscape. There are so many plants that will liven any landscape, even in the dead of winter.

Ilex verticillata-

The bright red berries look great with snow and add color to any winter landscape. They also attract birds which are always enjoyable to watch in the winter.

Cornus alba- also know as Red Twig Dogwoods

The red twig is a beautiful winter accent with the white snow as a backdrop.

 Picea pungens-

'Montgomery Blue Spruce' and 'Globosa' are two examples of evergreen shrubs with needles that hold their bright blue color all year round.

So, as you look out into your frozen, snow covered yard, what would you rather see?
