3 October Gardening Tips

Anne Marie DiMatteo | 15 October, 2011 | Landscaping Tips

October in the garden is one of my favorite times of year! Leaves are turning color, flowers are blooming, grass is green and the air is crisp!

3 simple gardening tips for October:

1- Pruning: If trees and shrubs are struggling to remain healthy now is the time to prune or deadhead them, otherwise let them thrive until their leaves fall and then prune them. If you are doing this yourself, remember to understand how each plant and shrub requires different pruning techniques.

2- Leaves: Once all the leaves have fallen from your trees it is important to deal with them by mowing, raking, blowing or removing them. If leaves pile only a few deep, they can eventually ruin the lawn and create bare, brown spots next spring. You still have a couple weeks until leaf removal or shredding needs to happen.

3- Plants: Now is the time to bring inside plants that may have been on your porch or patio for the summer. They need some time to acclimate themselves to indoor climates and light conditions.

Pick a sunny day and spend some quality time in your garden with a fall clean up and some fun bulb planting. If gardening is not your thing, don't hesitate to hire someone, like Moodscapes, to do your clean up and bulb planting. Just make sure you are outside enjoying the beautiful autumn air one way or another!
