Winchester Massachusetts Personal Landscape Design & Install

We were approached by a family in Winchester Massachusetts to design and install a new front and back yard that encompassed three very specific needs. The family wanted to use their yard to entertain family and friends, access the outside directly from their house, and enhance their new front entrance and porch.

In order to achieve all three goals, our team worked very closely with the clients throughout the entire process. Starting with the initial consultation, we made sure to completely understand the goals they had in mind and talked through all possible options that would achieve the three simultaneously.

The before pictures (above) show open space in the back with no privacy and no access to their back porch. The front of the house has large trees that eliminate curb appeal and limit their privacy.

1. Entertain friends and family- We planted part of the old driveway, added a fence, and installed a walkway from the driveway to the backyard. Shade gardens were added along both sides of the walkway, which leads into two patios spaces. There is a large entertainment space divided into upper and lower patios both made with brick and granite pavers.

2. Easily access back yard from the house- The lower patio connects directly to their back door, allowing for our clients to seamlessly enter their backyard from the inside.

3. Privacy from neighbors- To enhance their new front entrance and porch, the large shrubs were removed as they were overwhelming and detracted from the house. Plantings were chosen for color, texture, bloom time, and to be more consistent with the style of the house. The strategically planted Stewartia tree provides privacy from the neighbors, as well as a focal point from the porch. The tree hydrangeas frame the front porch and stairway while providing privacy.

In the back yard we created a lot of depth in order to create a private woodland garden with natives such as Birch and Hemlock trees, as well as the Bottlebush Buckeye shrub. A feeling of being deep in the woods was important to them and achieved by the depth designed.Winter interest plants were also carefully selected for the woodland and consisted of red and yellow twig dogwoods. All native plantings were hand picked for a low maintenance, sustainable personal landscape that softened and complimented the selected hardscape materials for the patios and fence.
