Outdoor Stairways: A Must-Read for Building a Comfortable Home Entryway

High-quality outdoor stairways can add both functionality and a touch of elegance to your landscape design. Stairs may be needed to provide access to and from a deck or patio space, or when there is a difference in grading between front and back lawns. Although stairs are a seemingly simple project element, there are many considerations for designing the perfect exterior staircase for your space.

What factors should you consider when designing an outdoor stairway?

Building stairs outdoors might, at first, seem like a simple project. However, there are multiple factors that can influence the success of an outdoor stair design. Some questions you’ll want to ask include:

How many steps will be included?

It’s best to incorporate the minimum number of steps possible into your outdoor staircase.  Wider, more shallow steps are easier for older adults, small children, and pets alike.

Along with the number of steps for your staircase, you’ll also want to consider the size of the risers, which is the space from one stair tread to the next. Steep stair risers will be more tricky for homeowners and visitors of all ages to navigate.

How will the stairs be used?

Consider whether your outdoor stairway will be in a high-traffic area, such as at the main  entrance to your home, or whether they’ll be utilized less frequently, as with a side or basement door. Some outside stairs are used primarily seasonally, such as with backyard stairs leading to a swimming pool, fire pit, or patio.

Does your planned stairway adhere to local building codes?

The width of the steps and the size of a landing are typically regulated by local building regulations. It’s imperative to check these regulations before beginning construction of exterior stairs; this will save you both time and money in the long run.

For all of these reasons, constructing an outdoor stairway should not be considered a DIY project. While a set of stairs might seem like it would offer an easy installation with a quick trip to Home Depot, a professional will be able to create and execute a design that meets all your functionality and aesthetic requirements.

What types of materials can you use to construct an outdoor stairway?

When you’re designing your outdoor staircase, you’ll have a choice of multiple material options available to you. For the safest and most durable outdoor stairway, here are some that we recommend you explore:

Concrete

Concrete stairways are a popular choice in New England due to the material’s ability to withstand extreme temperatures. Concrete also requires relatively little maintenance or repair over the years.

Stone

Like concrete, stone is durable, weathers extreme temperatures, and requires little maintenance. And, unlike wood, stone or concrete stairs won’t need to be regularly treated.

Metal

There are several options for metal stairways, including steel and aluminum. Metal stairways can blend in nicely with both modern and older-style homes.  The installation process is quicker as compared with stone and concrete, and the overall cost is generally less as well.

A special note about wood stairs: If you choose this option, there are some additional considerations you’ll need to keep in mind. First, even pressure treated wood will require regular maintenance such as staining and sealing, and will also be subject to fading. In addition, they also can splinter and crack, becoming a trip hazard.

In comparison, a long-lasting material like stone can avoid some of these headaches, while also significantly boosting the curb appeal of your home and landscape.

Additional Features for Your Exterior Stairs

Regardless of the material you choose for your outdoor stairway, non-slip treads can be a great way to increase safety, with many options to choose from to ensure the right fit with your overall staircase design. Rubber, aluminum, and outdoor carpet are just some of the non-slip options available.

The addition of balusters is also possible with each of the above-mentioned stairway materials. Balusters can add some architectural interest, create a more seamless connection between your home exterior and outdoor space, and provide an extra measure of safety.

The right exterior stairway design will improve access, usability, safety, and aesthetics in your outdoor space. When thoughtfully planned, the addition of outdoor stairs is a solid investment to increase the curb appeal and overall value of your home.
